After spending a couple of months discussing the short, Steve
and I decided to start the preproduction process in April 2006.
By placing ads on Craigslist.com and Myspace.com, we had over
300 actors ready to audition for the 5 parts. We were really lucky
to receive such great talent.
The process of casting actors for the short was incredibly interesting.
Some of the more memorable actor submissions included:
• The actor that emailed us his headshot and resume that
was forwarded from his girlfriend’s email. She stated that
she “fluffed up” his resume to make it look better.
• A woman who actually listed "Girls Gone Wild"
under experience and had "Valley Girl" under accents!
• Another actress who sent a headless body shot taken with
her cell phone camera.
• The actor that stated, "I look better in person,
but not by much."
Break-up Bob took 2 days (one weekend) to shoot the 9 page script
in July 2006. We filmed with a Canon XL-2. We shot in four locations
around Los Angeles: a home and a church in Granada Hills, a home
in Atwater Village and an apartment in West Hollywood. Our production
coordinator had to bribe the pool-goers at the West Hollywood
apartment with beer and soda to keep it down during the takes.
Two weeks before the Premiere at The Renberg Theater (Los Angeles)
in September, Steve and I sat down with the editor to add a few
last minute touches to the film. Thanks to the incompatibility
of Apple and PC, all the editing, as well as the digitized film
was gone. I realized that I had accidentally erased the external
hard drive. It was at this time that I started calling the film
“Humpty Dumpty,” as it took three full days of re-editing
and redigitizing the tapes to put the film back together again.
